    MLB's Hidden Edge: How Weather and Ballparks Create Value

    Wind speed at Wrigley, altitude at Coors, and humidity everywhere โ€” baseball is the only sport where weather directly changes the math. Here's how to exploit it.

    The Weather Advantage

    Baseball is played outdoors, on fields with different dimensions, at different altitudes, in different climates. No other major sport has this much environmental variance โ€” and the betting market consistently underprices it.

    Wind: The Invisible Line Mover

    At Wrigley Field, wind blowing out at 15+ mph can add 2-3 runs to the expected total. Wind blowing in suppresses fly balls and creates pitcher-friendly conditions. This is a 4-5 run swing on the total, and the market rarely adjusts by more than 1-2 runs.

    ### How to Check - Weather.com hourly forecasts for game time - Wind direction relative to the outfield (blowing out vs. in) - Sustained wind speed (gusts don't matter as much as sustained)

    Altitude: The Coors Effect

    At 5,280 feet, Coors Field reduces air resistance on batted balls by approximately 5%. Fastballs have less movement. Breaking balls break less. The result: 28% more runs scored than a neutral park.

    But here's the edge: the Coors hangover effect. Teams leaving Denver often struggle the next game because their timing is recalibrated for Coors conditions. Fading teams in their first game after a Coors series is a profitable long-term strategy.

    Temperature and Baseballs

    Baseballs are stored at 70ยฐF in humidors at most parks. But once the ball is in play, ambient temperature matters: - 90ยฐF+: Ball travels ~5 feet further per fly ball - 50ยฐF or below: Ball travels ~8 feet shorter - Every 10 degrees above 70ยฐF adds roughly 0.5 runs to expected total

    Humidity: Overhyped

    Despite popular belief, humidity has minimal effect on batted ball distance. Dense, humid air actually weighs less than dry air (water vapor is lighter than nitrogen/oxygen). Don't factor humidity into your models.

    The Arbitrage Play

    When a game moves from a hitter's park to a neutral park in a series, the total often doesn't adjust enough. Track park-adjusted totals and compare to the posted number.

    Building Your Weather Model

    1. Check wind direction and speed at game time
    2. Note the temperature (every 10ยฐ = ~0.5 runs)
    3. Apply park factor multiplier
    4. Compare your adjusted total to the market total
    5. Bet when your number differs by 1.5+ runs
