Goalies Are Options Contracts
Think of a starting goaltender as an options contract. The "strike price" is the market's expected performance (the line). The "volatility" is how much that performance can vary night to night. And just like options, goalies are frequently mispriced.
The Variance Problem
A field player might vary their performance by 10-15% game to game. A goalie can vary by 50%. A .940 save percentage one night becomes .880 the next. No other position in any sport has this much variance โ and variance is where traders make money.
GSAx: Your Edge Metric
Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) is the single most important goalie metric for bettors. It measures how many goals a goalie saved compared to what an average goalie would save, given the quality of shots faced.
### Reading GSAx - +15 season GSAx: Vezina-caliber, carrying the team - +5 to +15: Above average, reliable - -5 to +5: League average - Below -5: Below average, liability
### The Key Insight GSAx over the last 10 games is MORE predictive than season-long GSAx. Goalies are streaky. A goalie with +20 season GSAx but -5 over his last 10 is declining, not just having a bad stretch.
The Backup Goalie Market
This is where the real value lives. Backup goalies are systematically mispriced because:
- The market assumes the starter: Lines are set assuming the expected starter. When the backup gets the nod, the line adjusts โ but not enough.
- Good backups on good teams: A backup with +3 GSAx on a 110-point team is undervalued because the team's quality carries him.
- Bad backups as fade targets: When a bottom-5 backup starts for a mediocre team, the other side has massive value.
Confirmed Starter Strategy
Never bet NHL until the starter is confirmed. Follow these steps: 1. Check team beat reporters by 10 AM ET on game day 2. Monitor morning skate reports (starter usually takes the first rush) 3. Watch for line movements that signal a goalie switch 4. If the line moves 10+ cents after goalie confirmation, the market agrees with your read
Workload and Fatigue
### The Back-to-Back Trap Goalies starting both ends of a back-to-back see their SV% drop by approximately .010 โ that's roughly 0.3 extra goals allowed on an average shot volume. The market barely accounts for this.
### The 55-Game Wall Goalies who play 55+ games in a season show measurable decline in the final 15-20 games. Track games played and look for fatigue patterns in March/April.
My Process
- Confirm the starting goalie
- Check his 10-game rolling GSAx (not season-long)
- Note rest days and recent workload
- Compare the line movement post-confirmation to my expectation
- If the market underreacts to a goalie change, that's my bet
